Description:
Are you a self-starter and phenomenal teammate? Do you roll up your sleeves and #GSD? Are you keen to be part of the data science team at a fast-growing start-up? If so, look no further

We’re on the hunt for a talented data scientist to identify insights in big data by building ML models and using AI techniques to help small business owners understand their insurance risks

Who we are

Digital Fineprint is a multi-award winning insurance technology start-up based in Borough in London. Our mission is to leverage digital, machine learning and big data technologies to help insurance companies optimise their commercial insurance sales distribution performance. Supported by over $3m in funding from Pentech Ventures (the first investors in Nutmeg and Fanduel, a unicorn), Eos Venture Partners and FOM Capital, DFP is already working with insurers such as Hiscox, QBE and Zurich’s subsidiary Tennyson. Our management team come from a background in private equity, data science, web development and technology from companies such as Amazon, Twitter, Strategy&, Sovereign Capital, and the business launched out of Oxford University in 2016.

We are really proud of the team that we have built so far. We are currently 17 people but by the time you join, we could well have reached over 20. That's how fast we are growing!

About the role

As a Data Scientist you’ll be researching what insights can be found in both public and private data sets which would help identify types and levels of insurance risk for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). We are building our Data Asset by using ML to learn about a company and identify trends in claims and risk information. It is our desire to have all permutations of risk about every SME in the world available to ensure that each individual company knows exactly what insurance to buy.

We’re looking for someone who is comfortable in identifying trends from a disparate set of data, including both publicly-available datasets (such as Google or Companies House information) and private datasets (such as historic claims information). Our data science team have a wide-ranging remit, from pure research on new datasets, through building out models and services that can be productionised by our Development team, to working directly with our growing customer list.

You’ll be reporting directly to our Head of Engineering and will have the ability to propose a new research direction we’ve not thought of before - we want thinkers and doers, not worker drones. As we’re a growing start-up, we don’t like to pigeon hole people so expect the freedom to try a number of different things.

Tech you’ll be working with

Our tech stack is always maturing, and we believe that using the right tool for the job is more important than adhering to any specific language, but at the moment we use Python (Flask) for our Data Science, and our production stack is a combination of these, React, Sass, PHP (Laravel), RabbitMQ, MongoDB, and a few other bits. We make use of AWS and Azure to both perform our research and to host our production products and services and are always looking for ways to improve our tech and processes.

Requirements

We’re looking for someone who can come in, make a difference, and increase the skill and strength of the team. We value the ability to get things done over most and would like to see evidence that you can do this. Some of the specific things that we’d like to see from you are:

Proficient with Python Good understanding of statistical techniques/methods Experience in extracting, processing and analysing data sets Understanding of data & analytics applications in the business context General curiosity to explore value from data Clear evidence that you are always looking to develop your skills A few years of commercial development experience We’d be even happier if you had some, or even all, of the following:

Experience using cloud computing for data science (AWS or Azure) Actuarial background or experience in insurance sector Visualisation dashboard design and build Benefits

We can offer you the opportunity to work in an exciting and growing arena with exposure to our Development team and their techniques. You will form part of an enthusiastic and exciting team who are all really easy to get on with. We offer a competitive salary and a range of benefits, including:

Flexible working Subsidised gym Workplace health coaching Share options scheme Pension scheme Free drinks and treats Cycle2Work scheme Software credits Allowance for learning 23 days off + bank holidays Board game tournaments Regular team lunches and other team events The fast-paced, exciting start-up life We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.

(Please note that we don't work with recruitment agencies/IT contract firms/outsourcing partners, as we do all our recruitment and development in-house.)
