We are looking for a pragmatic and collaborative legal counsel to lead Bulb’s work on data protection and provide general commercial advice across the business.

Our mission is to help our members reduce their bills and their carbon impact. Protecting our members’ data and protecting Bulb is an important part of that mission. As we grow and roll-out smart meters, we want to build data protection practices that put our set the tone across the energy market and beyond.

Success in this role means ruthless prioritisation, following risks not checklists, working closely with product managers and being ready to put members first.

You will be the first in-country legal hire at Bulb. You will report directly to our Head of Legal and our Head of Risk and Regulation, working closely with the senior leadership team. In addition to data protection, you will support on major contractual negotiations and legal advice for our Bulb Labs team.

Your main responsibilities will include:

Lead advice on compliance with all aspects of privacy law and regulation including data protection, retention, security and breach rules. Assist in the continual development of Bulb’s privacy compliance programme (e.g. supplier management, privacy policies, team training etc). Support our Product teams to embed ‘privacy by design’ into all Bulb products. Provide legal advice on other matters as they arise, escalating to (and managing) external counsel where necessary (e.g. wider consumer protection laws, intellectual property for Bulb Labs, negotiation with service providers, corporate affairs, M&A/fundraising). Design and build out legal team that can face a range of corporate, commercial and legal issues and that is integral to the business, not merely a support function. Requirements

At Bulb we want to hire people with the experiences necessary to get going quickly, but who are also interested in learning new things and are comfortable working in a changing environment.

This Legal Counsel role is perfect for a 3-5 year PQE lawyer with experience in data protection and privacy, who wants to do more. This is an opportunity to expand beyond data protection and privacy and get involved in commercial, corporate, IP, advertising, international expansion or any other legal requirements arising in one of the UK’s most exciting and high-growth businesses.

Here are some of the things we think will be valuable, but we're also open-minded. If you recognise yourself in any of these traits, we’d love for you to send us an application.

You are a UK qualified lawyer with 3-5 years post-qualification experience. International qualifications/experience is a bonus. You have experience working on data protection and privacy issues, as well as general commercial law. You have experience with technology-led organisations, ideally in consumer-facing businesses. You are collaborative by default. You are comfortable working at all levels of the organisation and also keen to roll your sleeves up and get stuff done. You are flexible and willing to work on a range of legal issues, and are undaunted by new challenges and a requirement to understand new areas of law. You have exceptional communication skills and are able to communicate complex ideas in a simple fashion Bulb cares deeply about helping the technology and energy industries become a more inclusive and diverse place and we work hard to lead by example.

We offer some great benefits:

Be part of a growing technology startup and help shape the future of energy Collaborative, flexible and friendly environment Competitive salary, share options and bonus 25 days’ holiday (excluding bank holidays) 1 month sabbatical leave after your first year Training budget, healthcare and a pension plan with employer contributions Cycle to work scheme Free breakfast on Fridays
