The Bar Council represents over 16,000 barristers in England and Wales. It promotes the Bar’s high quality specialist advocacy and advisory services; fair access to justice for all; the highest standards of ethics, equality and diversity across the profession; and the development of business opportunities for barristers at home and abroad.

The Bar Council is the governing body and the Approved Regulator for the Bar of England and Wales. It discharges its regulatory functions through the independent Bar Standards Board.

We are looking for a Bar Services Assistant to join a busy and dynamic team. The position will offer the ideal opportunity to develop your skills in this demanding but rewarding sector. Training will be provided, so no prior experience of office work or working in a membership or professional body is essential.

Based within the Services team of the Bar Council, this role will assist on an extensive number of services to members of the Bar, including the Bar Representation Fee, the Chambers Membership Package, the Pupillage Gateway and many others. The Bar Services Assistant will work closely with the rest of their team as well as other teams across Representation, Policy and Services. Many of these will be commercial operations and therefore financial awareness and attention to customer service needs and detail will be required. Equally, the post is the first point of call to barristers enquiring about the services we provide, so excellent communications skills are critically important (orally as well as in writing).

The candidate will need to demonstrate that s/he is interested in the work of barristers and of the Bar Council, that s/he can communicate confidently and expertly, also being able to consider when to seek guidance from others and/or conduct research to aid decisions being made.

This is a fast paced but very rewarding role and the right candidate will need to be able to juggle multiple tasks to ensure the reputation of the Bar Council as a provider of high-quality services is upheld.

If you would like to join at this exciting time, we’d like to hear from you.

In return the Bar Council offers excellent terms and conditions of employment, including:

Up to 31 days annual leave

Up to 13% employer’s pension contribution

Enhanced maternity and paternity pay

Life cover, and more
